Here s how laughter yoga can help seniors fight clinical depression

Been feeling down lately? Find something that’ll make you laugh, quick!

According to Pinoy Laughter Yoga president Paolo Trinidad, laughing can activate the release of endorphins that can help the body fight a depressed mood.

“‘Yun pa lang napaka-simpleng pag-ngiti pa lang nila, hindi pa tumatawa, nakakapag-produce na po silang panlaban sa clinical depression na tinatawag di ba ho na endorphin, at higit sa lahat, serotonin,” he explained.

Endorphins are commonly referred to as the happy hormone while serotonin modulates mood, well-being, and happiness.   

In a segment of Unang Hirit’s “Hirit Pa More ni Mareng Winnie,” Trinidad showed the host Winnie Monsod a few laughing exercises that seniors can easily try at home.

Many of these exercises can be done while sitting, like massaging your jaw, raising you arms, and smiling while saying “ha ha ha” over and over.

“Kahit 20 seconds pa lang po ng fake laughter — hindi pa ho totoong pagtawa — katumbas na po yun ng three to five minutes na heavy workout,” Trinidad said, quoting the Dr. William Fry, known as the father of ‘gelotology’ (the science of laughter).

Mareng Winnie also shared a piece of advice for her fellow Lolos and Lolas, “Life is better when you’re laughing, so laugh as much as you can.” — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
