Several dogs owned by a man living under an overpass got vaccinated, neutered, and spayed for free with the help of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
According to Jamie Santos’ report on “24 Oras Weekend,” Sunday, Kuya Edgar and his dogs were spotted by a volunteer last Thursday, so they were immediately visited by PAWS.
“When we went there, we were just expecting his three dogs and one sick dog who was on a crib. But then, we saw three healthy puppies,” said Sharon Yap, PAWS education officer, in English in Filipino.
They asked Kuya Edgar if they could take the dogs with them so they could get the care they need. Although hesitant at first, he obliged after benefits were explained to him.
“Akala ko ‘di babalik eh. Akala ko hinuli na eh [I thought they wouldn’t return them. I thought they were taken into custody],” Kuya Edgar said.
Spaying or neutering is the removal of reproductive organs from animals. According to the PAWS, its benefits include reduced number of unwanted pets and reduced chances of diseases, among others.
When PAWS got a hold of the fur babies, Kuya Edgar said he had a hard time for a few days as his dogs are the only ones by his side.
“‘Di ako masyadong nakatulog kasi wala akong katabi dito. Sila katabi ko. Sila lang pamilya ko. Wala na akong ibang pamilya. Sila, yumayakap sa ‘kin. ‘Yung magulang ko ‘di ako niyakap eh,” he said.
[“I wasn’t able to sleep properly ’cause I had no one beside me. They sleep beside me. They’re my only family. I have no other family. They hug me. My parents, they didn’t hug me.”]
Yap said Kuya Edgar is a good example for fellow fur parents or those who want to start caring for animals after seeing him put his pets’ well-being among his priorities.
“Kahit tinamaan ng mabigat na problema because of the pandemic, hindi po niya naisip na i-abandon ‘yung mga alaga niya,” she said.
“Tinreat niya po as family na talagang inalagaan po niya at ayaw pakawalan at mawalay po sa kanya.”
[“Even though he was affected by a huge problem because of the pandemic, he never thought of abandoning his pets. He treated them as family whom he cared for and didn’t want to be away from him.”]
