Teacher inspires many after surviving cancer, returns to work after recovery

A teacher from Cagayan is now serving as an inspiration to many after beating cancer.

According to a report on “24 Oras,” Thursday, Teacher Shina May Tabisaura from Abariongan National High School in Santo Niño, Cagayan was diagnosed with cancer in 2018.

She developed 10 lumps on her neck—four of them malignant—due to papillary carcinoma, a type of thyroid cancer.

“Nung inambulansya nila ako ang word ko nun, pagod na ko ‘ka ko nun. Naka oxygen na ako hindi pa rin ako makahinga. Lahat na binibilin ko na nun lalo na ‘yung anak ko,” she said.

[When the ambulance took me back then, ‘I’m tired’ was the word I said. I was on oxygen but I still couldn’t breathe. I was telling them my final wishes especially for my child.”]

She wanted to give up when she thought she would no longer recover, but she eventually found the strength to soldier on.

“‘Di ‘yun binigay ng Diyos kung di ko kaya. Kayanin ko ‘to para sa pamilya lalo na sa anak ko,” she said.

[“God would not give that to me if I couldn’t survive it. I would survive it for the sake of my family and for my child.”]

After one year of battling cancer, Shina fully recovered and has now returned to her teaching duties.

Her family received a grocery pack from the GMA Kapuso Foundation, which has been going around various communities in need to distribute aid.

The GMA Kapuso Foundation is accepting donations through bank deposits, Cebuana Lhuiller, and Pay Maya. Vouchers can also be bought from Shopee and Zalora.
