Siblings suffering from a life-threatening disease and needing regular blood transfusions have received aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation.
According to a “24 Oras” report, Wednesday, Charmaine Boac’s two kids have been undergoing blood transfusions since they were babies. They were diagnosed with a condition called beta thallasemia major.
“Pabalik-balik ’yung lagnat tapos ’yung nanghihina, namumutla, nangangayayat, ’yung mata nagdidilaw, ’yung mga kuko ay maitim,” said Charmaine.
Pediatric hematologist and oncologist Dr. Maria Victorio Dio said beta thallasemia major was a defect in the hemoglobin, which brings oxygen to various parts in the body.
This illness requires a lifetime of blood transfusions. If not done, it may be life-threatening to the patient.
“There will be very less oxygen na pupunta o made-deliver sa vital organs na kung saan manganganib din ang kalagayan ng pasyente, eventually leading to heart failure,” said the doctor.
A surgical procedure called splenectomy can be done to reduce the need for transfusions, but until then, it is essential to get enough blood supply.
To help the young brothers, the Sagip Dugtong Buhay Bloodletting Project was organized by GMA Kapuso Foundation at Camp Aguinaldo and Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija.
Among those who donated blood were soldiers from the 7th Installation Management Battalion, led by Deputy Chief for Intelligence Maj. Gen. Alex Luna.
According to the Department of Health, those who are vaccinated against COVID-19 can donate blood as long as they don’t have symptoms.
GMA Kapuso Foundation is accepting donations through bank deposits, Cebuana Lhuillier, Shopee, GCash, PayMaya, Zalora, Mega Mart, Globe Rewards, Metrobank credit card, and Lazada.
