Struggling to create an opening message for your Bumble match? Here are some tips

Building a connection with your Bumble match may be quite the work, but having a distinctive opening message may put you into a good start.

Aside from just saying the usual “hey” or “hello,” there are many more ways to reach out that would also make the receiving end feel enthusiastic to reply.

Straight from the experts, here are some things you can try to up your dating game.

1. Be personal

In a virtual discussion on the modern dating scene in the Philippines, Asia-Pacific Communications Director Lucille McCart said it pays to tap on the match’s individuality.

“If it’s personal, you use their name. [That is] going to set off easy responses for the other person,” she said, explaining that instead of just a “hi,” you may try adding their name after.

McCart said it is also important to check their profiles for things that you may relate to. Remember, they curated those for you to see if you will be able to build a conversation.

“If I see other parts in their bio that we share similar interests, it makes it 10 times easier for them to respond quickly and get a conversation going,” she said.

“They might ask you back about something they saw in your profile and you’ll get to know each other.”

2. Use the Question Game

It can’t be helped that some profiles give too little information about themselves, so if you’re having a hard time finding that common denominator, you may try the Question Game.

“There’s pre-loaded questions and you can ask someone. If you’re really not sure how to make the first move, that’s almost like a cheat version of it,” McCart said.

How does it work? The feature gives random questions for both, but doesn’t reveal the answers until the two have finished. With this, users get the chance to know their insights on one topic.

Among the questions given are about their terrible skills, what problem in the society they would like to be fixed, top five places they’d like to visit, and what they think is a sexy name for someone.

3. Set the tone

Some tend to want to create a good impression, but remember: you’ll want someone who’s on the same radar as you. As such, approach how you want to be approached.

“I set the tone for how I also want to be approached. It sends that message already because of the way I set the tone and how I want this to move forward,” multimedia journalist Ana Santos said.

“It offers a lot of control without being very out there—subtle and suave in a way that it puts me in the driver’s seat,” she added.

Related to this is being true to oneself. If you’re a strong and independent woman then so be it!

“‘Hey, this is who I am as a Filipina and this is what I want in a partner, in a teammate, and this is what I’m gonna look for on Bumble when I swipe according to what I want. I’m the boss of me,'” she said.

“It’s about being comfortable in who you are and confident about who you represent to the world.”

4. Try the audio and video features

Let’s say you’ve hit it off for a few days through chat, but what’s next? Enters the audio and video notes.

Aside from it being a safe way to know that you are, indeed, talking to a real person, these features also allow for a deeper kind of connection, said clinical psychologist Dr. Margie Holmes.

“What you learn is not only what the person says but how you interact. Does he listen as much as talk?” she said. “You get to know so much more—whether he listens to you as much as you listen to him.”

“You get much better sense of someone’s tone of voice, the way they speak than text,” she added. “That is a really interesting way to connect to people before you consider meeting up in person.”

Before all these, however, remember to also make an effort on your profiles to get those swipe rights!

Go ahead and try these tips with the users in your match queue. Who knows? They might be “The One” for you. Happy connecting!
