Negros Don Papa Rum among top premium rums in the Netherlands

Produced at the foothills of Mount Kanlaon in the Philippines, Don Papa Rum has grown to be among the top three premium rums in the Netherlands according to a major rum distributor in the Netherlands.

“By offering a portfolio of sweetened and non sweetened rums, we can reach a broad group of consumers. Don Papa rum is widely available for the final consumers as well as for the guests in the on-trade industry. This is part of our success,” said Henk Hetzel, brand ambassador of rum distributor André Kerstens B.V.

When Philippine Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya visited one of the offices of André Kerstens B.V., vinologist and teacher at the Dutch Wine Academy Olaf Kerstens showed him a limited edition of Don Papa Port.

“We are happy and proud that this premium-aged rum is now available in the Netherlands as it is among the Philippines’ best products,” said Malaya. “Rum-making has a rich tradition in the Philippines, and Filipinos have enjoyed rums for ages.”

The story behind Don Papa’s success in the Netherlands

The combination of flavours of Don Papa Rum and the myth behind it makes this premium brand popular in The Netherlands.

Manufactured by the Bleeding Heart Rum Company, Don Papa Rum is inspired by Dionisio “Papa Isio” Magbuelas, a sugarcane farmer and a Filipino revolutionary leader who played a key role in the late 19th century revolution in freeing the island of Negros from Spanish rule.

Rum as we know is made of sugar, of which Negros island is so rich, it’s come to also be known as Sugarlandia. And so it’s not a surprise that it’s produced rum as fine and as developed as Don Papa.

In the Netherlands, a range of Don Papa rums are available. “The Don Papa Baroko (the flagship 7-year-old and the 10-year-old rums) have a sweeter profile that suits the Dutch taste palate and is an easy entrée for the staring rum drinker. For the rum connoisseur, we have our non-sweetened specials in our portfolio. Because of this, we can provide a rum for every rum drinker. Besides our product, we tell a beautiful and true story about our brand and the heritage of the island of Negros,” said Hetzel, “chef turned booze ambassador.”

A rare cask edition

Adding to the range of rums is the limited edition Don Papa Port, which will be launched in November 2021, in commemoration of the 500th year of circumnavigation of the world by explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

“We are looking forward to find casks to finish our rums on and give them the character of the cask in which they are aged or finished without losing the beautiful characteristics of our Philippine rum,” Hetzel said.

Don Papa Rum became available in Dutch market through André Kerstens B.V. in 2015, which imported it from the Philippines. It is bottled in The Netherlands by Herman Jansen Beverages Nederland B.V. in Schiedam.

The rum comes in different varieties and ’barrel finishes’ and could be used as mixers for cocktails, in ice cream, cakes, desserts, coffee or simply on the rocks. It is available in most wine shops and liquor stores in The Netherlands. — LA, GMA News
