Here’s what young Filipinos are listening to when they’re stressed or anxious

What do you listen to when you feel stressed or anxious? What do you put on when you find yourself having a sleepless night?

Apparently, Millennials and Gen Zs are turning more into non-music, non-talk audio content to destress.

According to data gathered by Spotify and YouGov, 80 percent of young Filipinos believe that audio is a powerful tool to relax and unwind.

Meanwhile, 70 percent of them use audio to aid falling asleep, and almost 70 percent of them use audio to help them focus during work or study.

Specifically, there are four types of audio they turn to:

1. Nature sounds

The most popular audio that Filipinos unwind to are nature sounds — birds singing, winds blowing, rain falling.

Spotify said that nearly 50 percent of young Filipinos listen to nature sounds when trying to fall asleep.

Twenty-eight percent of Gen Zs and 18 percent of millennials listen to nature sounds when studying or working. Sixty-six percent of young Filipinos listen to nature sounds at least once a week.

2. ASMR

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is what people call the “tingling” sensation that runs from the back of the neck down to the spine. This feeling can be invoked several ways, but one popular method is through audios or videos of people who are doing something as simple as whispering or other quiet activities amplified by a microphone.

According to Spotify, 53 percent of Filipino Gen Zs listen to ASMR at least once a week, and that they specifically enjoy the sounds of drawing, paper cutting and tearing as compared to sounds of biting, chewing and swallowing.

“Sleeping Pill With Inka Magnaye” is one of the more popular channels who provide such a service. In her Spotify podcast, Filipina voice actress Inka Magnaye reads poems and books to ease her listener’s anxieties and help them fall asleep.

3. White Noise

White noise is now serving as audio therapy for many. More than 1 in 2 Filipinos listen to different forms of background noise at least once a week, Spotify said.

Pink sound — which is noise set at a lower frequency — is also a thing for them now, and so is brown noise, which contains more bass.

“Here in the Philippines and all around the world, people are redefining what mental and physical wellness means,” said Kossy Ng, Spotify Head of Music for Asia Pacific.

“We are encouraged that many, especially the younger generations, are pulling back the curtain and using various auditory experiences to connect with themselves and prioritize their well-being,” she added.

Spotify’s Wellness Research Trends 2021 was conducted via online survey by YouGov between Sept. 23 and 27, 2021.

The Philippines sample size was 1,179 adults and is representative of all Filipino adults aged 18 years old and older. —JCB, GMA News
