A Filipino in Singapore has turned his love for pets into a profession by training mobility aid dogs for their disabled fur parents.
According to Oscar Oida’s “24 Oras” report Wednesday, Allen Villanueva is the head trainer at the biggest school for mobility aid dogs in Singapore.
The report showed the trainers acting out various situations for the animals, such as being injured or pregnant. The trainers taught the dogs how to open doors and what to do when their human collapses, among other emergency measures.
They even danced to loud music all over the training ground while the dogs remained still.
Villanueva said he had always loved pets, but had no formal training to teach dogs. He studied by observing others and online through tutorials on YouTube.
“When I was an intern, I look at trainers who train K9s at the airport. I look at what they do, study, read, and watched about it on YouTube until I was prepared,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Classes at their dog training school cost about PHP180,000 per month. “Here in Singapore, their dogs are like their babies. They shoulder their education even though it is expensive,” said Villanueva.
However, he said showing love for pets was still the most important part of being a fur parent.
“Give them good food and treats. Always bond with them. Don’t lock them up in your homes. Walk with them. You should give them your time because they’re also like humans.” – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
