Is it normal for the skin to redden after using astringents?

Astringents are a staple in a lot of people’s skin care routines, but is it normal for it to cause redness?

In an episode of “Pinoy MD,” dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said continuous or too much use of products like astringent may cause irritability because of its ingredients.

“Usually, ang astringent — it contains alcohol, antibacterial properties, yung mga nakakatuklap, retinol, glycolic and of course, kadalasan, pwede ring may hinahalong whiteners,” she said.

(Usually, astringents contain alcohol, antibacterial properties, those that peel the skin, retinol, glycolic, and of course, most of the time, it may also have whiteners.)

According to Marquez, astringents are usually designed for those with oily and acne-prone skin types to help “smoothen, exfoliate, and diminish pores.”

If one experiences redness because of astringent, Marquez recommends decreasing its use or stopping it entirely. Instead, use toners with milder chemicals such as rose water.

Of course, Marquez added that it is also important to seek a dermatologist’s help to determine what the needed treatment or medication is needed for a patient. — Franchesca Viernes/LA, GMA News
