Physician Licensure Examinations topnotcher Dr. Maria Inez Benedicto shared the struggles of taking the exam amid the pandemic.
In an interview with Orly Trinidad on Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday, the medical board topnotcher said she only had 40 days to prepare for the September 2021 exam because she came straight from their postgraduate internship.
She also said they had to quarantine for 14 days before taking the exam.
“Eight lang kami sa classroom, naka-face shield and face mask habang nagte-take ng exam,” Benedicto said.
[“We were only eight in the classroom, we all wore face shields and face masks while taking the exam.”]
She also said that they can’t interact with other examinees and during breaks they can only go to the bathroom or eat.
Benedicto said the exam happened for two weekends. In between that period, Benedicto said they have to take all precautions to avoid getting infected with COVID-19.
“What if bigla akong lagnatin, magkasakit, so ma-fo-forfeit [‘yung exam]? Between those two weekends nasa loob lang rin kami ng mga dorms namin,” she said.
[“What if I get sick in between the two weekends? The exam will be forfeited so we strictly stayed inside our dorms.”]
Despite the struggles, Benedicto said she is grateful that she was able to overcome them.
She also said that she didn’t expect to be the topnotcher as she felt she wasn’t prepared enough.
“Isa na po ito sa pinaka-challenging na nangyari sa buhay ko, sobrang hirap po ng exam namin. Ganon siya kahirap,” she said.
[“This is one of the most challenging events in my life, that’s how difficult it was.”]
Benedicto also gave a piece of advice to those who will also be taking the Physician Licensure Exam.
“Advice ko lang is to work hard talaga, hindi talaga ‘to binibigay sa inyo, pinaghihirapan to,” she said.
[“My advice is to really work hard, this is something that is not given to you, you have to work for it.”]
“You have to have passion to do this, the right support network,” she added. “You need the right people to lift you up and remind you why you’re in this journey.”
Benedicto is a graduate from West Visayas State University La Paz in Iloilo City. She is one of the two topnotchers who scored a rating of 87.83 percent in the exam, according to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
Jude Philip Pozon Cebrecus from Cebu Institute of Medicine shared the top spot with Benedicto.
