Is your skin red and inflamed?
In an episode of “Pinoy MD,” dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said that if it is red, inflamed and appears like many maps across your skin, it could possibly be urticaria or tagulabay.
“Ang tagulabay ganyan itsura: nakaalsa, namumula, at marami. Usually kasi lumalabas ito biglaan, if na-exposed ito sa isang allergen,” she explained.
[Urticaria looks like that: inflamed, red, and a lot. It usually appears suddenly when exposed to an allergen.]
She added, “Ginagawa ng allergen — ‘yung fluid sa loob ng blood vessels magle-leak from blood vessels pupunta sa skin kaya magkakaalsa ng balat at pamumula.”
[What the allergen does, the fluid inside of the blood vessels will leak from the blood vessels and go to the skin. That’s why the skin gets inflamed and red.]
A possible cause of the allergic reaction, Marquez said, is that the person could have drank antibiotic, pain reliever, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that triggers the reaction.
Aside from intake of medicine, other possible causes that trigger the reaction are infection, parasites for children, pollen, food such as soya, nuts and shellfish.
Because of urticaria, Marquez said the person’s eyes and mouth can get swollen, and even the airways, too.
“Kaya dapat ma-examine ito kasi it can be life-threatening if may kaakibat na difficulty in breathing,” she said.
[That’s why this needs to be examined because it can be life-threatening if it comes with difficulty in breathing.]
The doctor also urged that the patient should go see a dermatologist even through an online consultation if the reaction is already widespread. — Kaela Malig/LA, GMA News
