Varicose veins can be a huge problem for men and women whose jobs require them to stand for an extended period of time.
They could feel some discomfort during cold weather or even pain, and while there are medical treatments available, prevention is often better than cure.
In an episode of “Pinoy MD,” Dr. Jean Marquez suggested easy lifestyle practices we can do to help prevent varicose veins from developing in our legs.
1. Eat fiber-rich food
In terms of diet, Marquez said consuming fiber-rich food items such as vegetables can help in the circulation of blood.
“The fiber can actually decrease constipation. If you’re not constipated, there will be less pressure on your veins,” she said.
Pressure in the veins is one of the causes of varicose veins by making it difficult for the blood to flow. The blood gets accumulated on the veins, which then start to bulge.
2. Eat food rich in flavonoids and antioxidants
Aside from fiber-rich food, adding food items with high flavonoids and antioxidants to your diet can help prevent varicose veins.
These are colored fruits and vegetables such as celery, which is rich in Vitamin K. Nuts are also an example of anti-inflammatory food.
“The flavonoids can improve the strength or ‘yung tibay ng ugat [durability of the veins],” Marquez said.
3. Wear compression stockings
Marquez recommended the use compression stockings if your job requires you to remain standing for a prolonged period of time.
According to the Mayo Clinic, compression stockings help promote circulation on the legs to prevent the build up of blood in the veins.
“Compression stockings can be used as a preventive [measure to mitigate or prevent the development of varicose],” Marquez said.
